At the beginning of the 18th century Peter the Great undertook a system of rapid Westernisation, turning his back on Medieval Russia and creating a new capital city to reflect this forward looking spirit : St Petersburg, the Window to the West. What Peter set in motion was a giant leap for Russia, pulling her out of obscurity and backwardness and guaranteeing a place for Russia on the European stage. The canal city he founded in 1703 was well under way by the time of his death in 1725 and during today's talk we look in some detail at the achievements of this remarkable historical character.
